Diabetology

Our diabetological ambulance offers diagnostic, treatment and preventive services to patients with hyperglycemia.

Diabetes mellitus (diabetes) is a very common civilization disease whose occurrence in the general public is on the rise.
In the Czech Republic the prevalence of this disease is currently 7%.

Diabetes mellitus in its early stages begins unnoticed and does not hurt.
Prevention is very important, especially in the case of obesity or family disposition towards diabetes.
Diabetes mellitus is the most important risk factor in regards to cardio-vascular complications, heart attacks, strokes, vision problems as well as kidney diseases.

If untreated, the risk of complications is very high, but these do not have to occur with early and proper treatment and good patient cooperation.

Distinction of diabetes mellitus:

1. Type 1, Insulin-dependent diabetes (juvenile onset): the result of an absolute lack of insulin develops mostly in childhood, adolescence or early middle age.

2. Type 2, noninsulin dependent diabetes: manifested through the relative insufficient supply of insulin, expressed though a so called insulin resistance, or the ability of the body to respond to insulin appropriately. It usually occurs during middle age of later in life.

Gestational diabetes mellitus can occur in the third trimester of pregnancy.
Secondary diabetes mellitus: occurs as a secondary symptom of other diseases (especially of the pancreas)

Obesity – has become one of our most significant health problems.
In the Czech Republic, 66% of all adult men and 54% of all adult women suffer from overweightness or obesity.
Obesity significantly increases the morbidity and mortality for cardio-vascular diseases.
Obesity is the result of a positive energetic balance.
The therapeutic treatment of obesity always has to be individual and complex.
Adjustments in the patient’s diet and physical exercise are pillars of the treatment.
Pharmaceutical treatment takes advantage of a range of medications with a variety of effective mechanisms.
A decrease of body mass by only 5% already constitutes a significant decline of health risks associated with overweightness and obesity.
